For both evangelicals and rap DJs, the vinyl LP was not a transparent vehicle of an originally live performance, but a source of musical meaning itself, a material site of potential codes, messages, and deformations of time. Though one doubts that Minister Mills was chillin’ with Grandmaster Flash or DJ Kool Herc, rap musicians and Christian evangelicals both recognized that popular music is a material inscription, one that can be physically manipulated in order to open up new vectors of sense and expression. In retrospect, what stands out most in the backmasking controversy is the marvelous image of all these preachers screwing around with turntables. While most people, Christian or otherwise, found all this rather silly, these fears did reflect more pervasive fears that the media had become a subliminal master of puppets-fears that would themselves come to inspire some 1980s metal. Soon backmasking became the Satanic panic du jour, giving paranoid Christians technological proof that rock bands like Queen, Kiss, and Styx (!) did indeed play the devil’s music. Noting wryly that words “certainly do have two meanings,” Mills argued on one program that the “subconscious mind” could hear these phrases, which is why sinful rock musicians put them there in the first place. The idea that some rock records contain “backmasked” messages goes back to the Beatles’ “Revolution 9,” which was rumored to contain the reversed announcement that “Paul’s a dead man.” As far as I can tell, Christian anti-rock crusaders got into the act in 1981, when a Michigan minister named Michael Mills hit Christian radio with the news that phrases like “master Satan,” “serve me,” and “there’s no escaping it” were hidden in the grooves of the Zeppelin hit. The darkest supernatural myth about Zeppelin’s most mythic song is that if you play the recording backwards, you will hear Satanic messages encoded in Plant’s vocals. I thought about all this again when I read Erik Davis’s piece at Salon, “ What exactly lurks within the backward grooves of ‘Stairway to Heaven?” I quit the band and stopped listening to Zeppelin for a while. The classic example was Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” This news was a shock to me since before my conversion I had been in a band (we only practiced, never played a gig) that played a lot of Zeppelin, including the iconic “Stairway.” I took my new evangelical faith (as I understood it back then) very seriously. I joined the evangelical fold as a high school student in the mid-1980s and quickly “learned” that “secular” rock bands often used backmasking to pass along Satanic messages. Perhaps the most famous case of backmasking was the Beatles’ White Album in which the words “Paul’s a dead man” was apparently heard when one of the songs was played backwards. This was the practice of placing secret messages on records that could only be heard when the record was played backwards. Some evangelicals in the 1980s were obsessed with backmasking. Persona 5 Royal will launch on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and Windows on Oct. Much like how the Phantom Thieves steal criminals’ desires, Persona 5 Royal has stolen my heart, and I can’t wait to see how Atlus will top this game in the future. I’m happy I finally got to play Persona 5 Royal as not only is this one of the best JRPGs on Xbox, I believe this is a candidate for one of the best games you can buy on Xbox. If you are a Shin Megami Tensei fan, a Persona fan, or a fan of JRPGs in general, you will thoroughly enjoy this game as it is one of Atlus’ best works yet. In addition, this game is great value for your money as it will take you dozens of hours to complete or even over a hundred hours if you take your time to look for all the Confidants and find secret unlockables. The plot was engaging, the characters were fantastic, the gameplay was addictive, and the Xbox Series X|S enhancements enriched its already excellent presentation. Overall, I absolutely adored Persona 5 Royal. Or The "All-Out Attack" technique, which lets you beat up an entire group of Shadows if you knock them all down. Shooting enemies with guns that you can augment with status ailment bullets. Persona 5 Royal takes this concept further by introducing a plethora of in-depth gameplay mechanics that can help you ruin a Shadow's day.Įxamples include the "Baton Pass," which passes your extra turn to other party members while increasing their damage output. Like most Shin Megami Tensei games, combat primarily involves exploiting your enemy's weaknesses to get extra turns to deal more damage while ensuring they don't do the same to you. Persona 5 Royal builds upon Shin Megami Tensei's turn-based combat system by introducing a plethora of in-depth gameplay mechanics that can help you ruin a Shadow's day. Should you decide to engage, you can use stealth-like mechanics to hide behind corners and ambush enemies to get the first hit on them. This game has no random encounters, meaning you can choose to attack and ignore regular enemies you wish. Now it's time to discuss the turn-based battle system of Persona 5 Royal. They are dangerous and will kill any intruder who dares to try to steal the Treasure inside. These are the Metaverse’s representations of a person’s mindscape, where their ego and darkest thoughts come to life as horrifying monsters called Shadows. Treasures are locked away deep inside complex, death-trap-riddled dungeons called Palaces. For example, if a person’s desires become so twisted in the real world, they manifest in the Metaverse as tangible objects called Treasures. They accomplish this by using a mysterious phone app to enter the Metaverse, an alternate dimension where mankind’s cognitions dictate the laws of reality. You may be wondering how exactly the Phantom Thieves steal the villains' desires. As the Phantom Thieves, your goal is to steal the desires of criminal scumbags while making time for your civilian life by going to school and developing friendships with the populace of Tokyo. The gameplay structure of Persona 5 Royal is that of a visual novel high-school simulator crossed with a dungeon crawler with turn-based combat. Break free from the shackles of corruption But thanks to the performance upgrades from the Xbox Series X|S port, this game has never looked better. Persona 5 Royal already had a top-notch presentation from its detailed anime visuals, in-genius character designs oozing with symbolism, stellar voice acting, and fantastic music. Watching the game’s over-the-top Showtime attacks during battle and cinematic in-game cutscenes go from 30fps on the PlayStation 4 to a crisp 60fps on Xbox Series X was a spectacular feast for the eyes. These may not seem a big deal at first, but they go a long way to enhance the highly stylish anime aesthetic this game strives for. The only additions Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S bring are an improved resolution of 1080p and a 60fps boost upgrade. I can also add any song from the concert to a playlist. One file with a CUE plays gapless on my systems and I can play any track by just clicking on a song title in the UI. The two Kodi screen shots in my OP is what you get when an a MKV with a CUE is scanned into the Kofpdi audio (music) library. So in those regards the cue method outlined above would work better, but if you don't want the video I'm guessing more steps would be needed to avoid it and you might not get all the other benefits (gapless and music listing). I can attach it to the file itself as an icon on my Mac (shows up in Mac file lists), but KODI ignores it. The other downside is I see no way to get KODI to show the album art with MKA. I'm guessing there's a small bug that needs fixed there. Oddly and unfortunately there are slight gaps when coming to the next chapter/track, which I don't understand since a MKA file is the same as MKV without the video. This one does show up in Music just like a cue album, but there's no video so you can watch a visualizer if audio isn't passed through ir run a slideshow even if it is. You can then use MKVToolnix to create an audio only version with chapter names already present from the previous steps. You can label them with the chapter editor in MKVToolnix and they then show up in KODI under bookmarks when you play the album and even get little picture snapshots if it has video. Most BD and concert albums already have chapter markers in them. (to be honest I was torn between absolute elation and total frustration - if only I'd known this earlierĭo concerts with video really belong in the music section of KODI? I can kind of see either standpoint. Happy Days concert & Music Video lovers!! I've had a play with 'Folder Nodes' but I'm only learning, I'm sure and could do wonders to truly integrate Music Video into Music! I'm hoping our resident music Devs can take a look at this as now Music Videos can reside within music database and maybe there's now more that can be done to integrate concerts into the Music world (an easy way to identify 'audio only' and 'music video'?). With this CUE discovery I can now do everything I want with my Concert Videos in the Kodi Music library! (Whoa!). Music Media Helper also has a tool to create M3U saved playlists (supported by Kodi) that can contain a mixture of audio and video files and I'm just adding support to add a songs embedded in a single concert MKV with multiple chapters. Here's screen shots (Aeon Nox Silvo skin): I've done this with a fresh Kodi 19.1 install with no Kodi customization. My iphone/iPad remote apps can play all of my concerts as a complete album OR I can pick and choose which songs to play, queue my favorites etc. If I have 'Auto Play next' enabled, there is no glitch between songs/chapters. Kodi switches to full screen video playback automatically, just like I am playing a Movie. I can choose to play any track just like playing an audio album. If I take a single big Concert file and create a CUE file at the Chapter breaks, add the Video File and CUE to a new folder under a Music Source and scan with Kod Music, the Concert appears as an Album' under the audio library Artist and shows each chapter as a song. I stumbled across a relatively easy way to get Concerts from my BDV and DVD rips into Kodi's Music library. GOOD NEWS - THESE PROBLEMS ARE NOW SOLVED! I've always split my concerts and just 'lived' with the glitch, but I know some that can't stand the glitch so use a single file and live with not being able to easily play any song at any any time. This is especially the case when playing HD video high bit rate TrueHD/Atmos or DTS-HDMA streams. But Kodi has always had a small glitch (pause) when users play all the concert song files in sequence, as Kodi opens the next video. One way around this is to split a single concert video (mkv file) into chapters, with this a user can jump to any song and create playlists. You get to play the entire concert but its difficult to play a specific song or create play lists containing specific concert 'songs' (example: A David Gilmour playlist with songs from various Pink Floyd and his own solo concerts). The two main problems most have are due to all concerts being sourced as Blu-ray or DVDV conversions (and some TV captures) where the concert is in one single file (Of course a Concert is one long continuous musical event). Some have just settled to get them into the Kodi Movie library or play them as 'files'. users have needed to create NFO files for music videos and concert videos to get them into the Music Video libray. The Kodi Music Video library has only minor updates over the years as its caught between 'Music' and 'Videos' with music video data stored in the Kodi's video database, but the artist meta data in the music db. Many of the Music lovers here have struggled at times to get our Concerts into Kodi for playback. The levels usually have some fixed objects that cannot be moved by the player, and so the only way to solve the puzzle is to carefully arrange the given objects around the fixed items. For example, mice will run towards nearby cheese. Available objects range from simple ropes and pulleys to electrical generators, bowling balls, and even cats and mice to humans, most of which have specific interactions with or reactions to other objects. The general goal of the games is to create a series of Rube Goldberg devices: arrange a given collection of objects in a needlessly complex fashion so as to perform some simple task (such as "put the ball into a box" or "start a mixer and turn on a fan"). The game was released through Steam for Windows and OS X on July 7, 2014. It was produced by Spotkin Games, a company founded by Jeff Tunnell, and features the same developers of the original Incredible Machine. Pushbutton Labs was later acquired by Playdom, itself a division of Disney Interactive, so as of now the rights are held by The Walt Disney Company.Ī new game by Jeff Tunnell, called Contraption Maker, is the spiritual successor to the Incredible Machine series. The entire series and intellectual property were acquired by Jeff Tunnell-founded PushButton Labs in October 2009. All versions were published by Sierra Entertainment. They were originally designed and coded by Kevin Ryan and produced by Jeff Tunnell, the now-defunct Jeff Tunnell Productions, and published by Dynamix the 1993 through 1995 versions had the same development team, but the later 2000–2001 games have different designers. The NAS is configurable via a web interface, but I needed to know its IP address for the URL. One thing of note – the Samsung drives are very very quiet compared to the clattery Seagate ones. Powering up, at first I thought it had failed as there was just a blinking white light on the front, but after a while the blue drive light started flickering as it read the disk. I unscrewed the first 1TB drive from its rail caddy and popped the 2TB onto it instead, and slid it into the NAS. Next, I took the second drive out of the NAS, leaving me with an empty chassis. dd reported ~22MB/s, so it would have taken ages to copy the whole 1TB anyway. Since I knew I didn’t want the data (I was going to copy it manually later), I interrupted the dd after a while, reasoning that the partition table and the contents of the important first partition would have been copied, and I didn’t care about the 2nd partition’s contents. (I discovered more details later, when I had to mount these drives to get at the old data.) The layout of the NAS drive is described in the above post: it’s two partitions, a small one containing Iomega’s NAS Linux, and a large ~1TB one for the data. This does a byte-for-byte copy of one drive to the other, including partition tables and whatnot. I ran a simple dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdc. Using the Ubuntu GUI Disk Utility I could see the models of each device and so know which was the NAS drive (a Seagate) and which the Samsung. Booting the Linux PC, I could then see the drives as new devices, /dev/sda and /dev/sdc. I extracted drive 1 from the NAS (a simple job of taking out two screws and sliding out the removable drive tray) and plugged it in too. So, I took a fresh disk (one of a pair of Samsung 2TB F4EG HD204UI/Z drives) and plugged it into one of two spare internal SATA cables in an Ubuntu Linux box. Being lazy I wondered whether I could just use UNIX dd to copy the old disk to a new one, as this should replicate the partition table and any contents. This fellow’s blog suggests that’s it doable, and describes preparing a disk by partitioning it, creating filesystems, copying key files etc. The project was therefore: get two new 2TB disks into the NAS, and then copy the data from the old 1TB disks. Iomega requires you to buy replacement drives from them at a hefty markup, but it seems you can just install your own (though according to the manual this will void your warranty). So, the time finally came to upgrade them. However, I then discovered the joys of archiving DVDs, and the drives soon filled up. Mainly this was to accommodate my iTunes library, which had outgrown the external drive it used to live on, so I thought 2TB would be more than enough. Inevitably, I bought the cheaper version with two 1TB disks. I mount it over NFS on my Mac to give me seamless filesystem-level access, and it has a DLNA media server which I pointed at the iTunes folder I keep on it, allowing me to browse and listen to music in bed on my phone (via a great little Android app called 2player). It really is quite sexy though.) It’s been a great little device so far. I’m a shallow human being, I bought it mainly because it wasn’t fugly like other NASes. Upgrading the disks in an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NASĪ while ago I bought an Iomega ix2-200 NAS box. ➡️ Absolutely undetectable - You’re safe and secure to run the hack tool non-stop 24/7, since it can not be detected by the original game designers.
